It is quite possible that the publishers were unaware of the passage's true author. This very brief extract, from what was in fact an enormous sermon by Edward Irving, is (except for the occasional word changes noted by Martin Arhelger) the exact passage as quoted in a sermon of William Paton Mackay (1839-1885) a Presbyterian minister of Hull, some of whose hymns can be found in Brethren hymn-books and with whom William Reid edited the British Evangelist.
