1 WHEN I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.
2 Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
Save in the cross of Christ my God:
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His blood.
3 See from His head, His hands, His feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down:
Did e'er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?
4 Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were an offering far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.
Well spotted, Douglas!
HAMBURG (#393) is the first of the two Alternate [sic] Tunes suggested in Spiritual Songs, though. However, the text being sung to Hamburg is not from Spiritual Songs or from other Little Flock editions - in the first verse it is 'Lord of glory' and among other slight differences there are two additional verses. Nicely sung though.
I point this out because these recordings were used quite often during lockdown when we weren't able to gather together in person. The Zoom host could play a recording of a hymn with everyone else muted but singing along where they were. It generally worked very well ! (Apart from the time a voice suddenly suggests "ladies only !")
