The “Days” of Scripture.

THERE are many days spoken of in Scripture which are worthy of our prayerful consideration.  In the apostle Peter's First Epistle (3: 20), he speaks of THE DAY OF LONGSUFFERING, "when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing."  Noah was a preacher of righteousness but no one gave heed to him: "they did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all," Luke 17: 27.
In the 95th Psalm, God calls upon Israel to hear His voice, and not harden their heart, as in THE DAY OF TEMPTATION in the wilderness. That day lasted forty years, and while it brought into evidence the marvellous patience of God, it manifested the true state of Israel. They did nothing but provoke Him, so that He said in His wrath, "they should not enter into my rest."
The brightest day that ever dawned was when Jesus was born; this was called THE DAY OF VISITATION, when "the dayspring from on high" visited Israel "to give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace," Luke 1: 79.
After the Lord's ascension, another day dawned, the day of grace, which is THE DAY OF SALVATION.  This day has lasted nearly two thousand years: "Behold, now is the day of salvation."  It is fast drawing to a close.  The features of "the last days" are visible on every hand and are an indication that THE DAY OF THE LORD is at hand.  That will be a "day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men."  It shall burn as an oven.  It will come upon the world "as a thief in the night.  For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them." How different this will be from that which the world is endeavouring to bring to pass, and upon which false hopes are being built.
But it will be followed by THE DAY OF CHRIST, which will be a day of untold blessing, when the glory of the Lord will cover the earth, as the waters cover the sea.  It will be ushered in by the rising of the Sun of Righteousness with healing in His wings.  Jesus said, "Abraham rejoiced to see my day, and he saw it, and was glad."  The apostle Paul, in Philippians 1: 6, looked forward to it as that in which he would receive the full reward of his labours, and was confident that He who had begun a good work in the saints would perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.  David in Psalm 72 gives a heart-thrilling account of that wonderful day.  Then the righteous will flourish, and there will be abundance of peace.  "He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth . . . His name shall endure for ever; his name shall be continued as long as the sun, and men shall be blessed in him; all nations shall call him blessed."
When that day of surpassing brightness has run its course of one thousand years, THE DAY OF GOD will dawn, and that will be eternal. By reason of it, "the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat . . . Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness," 2 Pet. 3: 10-13.  God will then be "all in all"; His tabernacle will be with men, and "he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.  And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain, for the former things are passed away," Rev. 21: 3, 4.
"Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless." 2 Pet. 3: 14.
