The phrase "a life more than usually eventful from her very childhood" refers to this; "When she was very young her mother died of tuberculosis and her father committed suicide, so she was raised by the family solicitor, Arthur West, who was a Quaker. They lived in Exmouth, and Devon, and eventually Bath .. ". West also later committed suicide.
