This is an interesting edition of JND's letters. I haven't done a comparison in any depth, but I have long been familiar with the second letter (on p.8ff) addressed to Charles Eynard, and discussing his life of Madame de Krüdener. The version here differs in several places with the version in 'Letters of J.N.D.' (Stowe Hill BTD) I:149-58. Not only does the translation differ in places but on p. 16 some sentences and a whole paragraph are omitted without any marks of ellipsis. It would be interesting to know who edited the two versions. Timothy Stunt

There is a solitary reference in J. Alfred Trench’s letters (#64) where he writes ‘as in a letter [by JND] I have given in Letters, Vol. I’ (https://www.stempublishing.com/authors/trench/jat301lt.html). From this I deduce that Grayson Carter’s attribution (in which he is followed by Tim Grass) is correct. It is nevertheless extraordinary that so many, well-informed, previous writers (Neatby, Noel, Rowdon, Coad, Weremchuk, Edwin Cross) seem to have been unaware (or at least failed to acknowledge) that this important task had been entrusted to Trench. Most recently the usually meticulous Donald Akenson has assumed, as have many others, that William Kelly was responsible for the 'Letters' as well as the 'Collected Writings'.(see Akenson, Discovering the End of Time, p.488.)
